Network Rail workshop

Our amazing science lesson with Network Rail!

Today, we had a visit from four representatives from Network Rail. They told us all about being an engineer and showed us some fascinating photos and videos. Then, we conducted an investigation to make a new substance to prevent trains from slipping on the tracks. We tested a variety of materials including sand, hair gel, honey and sugar. We measured them against three criteria:

  1. How much friction they created
  2. How viscous they were
  3. Whether or not they conducted electricity.

At the end of the workshop, we had a talk about railway safety and we got to try on some of the engineers’ uniforms. It was a great experience!
