Science Week Monday

Year 2

This afternoon, Year 2 have been learning about Rachel Carson. She is a famous author and scientist. She wrote three books about creatures that live in the sea but she is most famous for writing about how bad DDT was to use on fruit because of how it affected the animals.

We enjoyed watching a video about her life and then choosing whether to write a fact file, a leaflet or a poster based on her. It was amazing!

Year 3

Today our student councillors were involved in a whole school science assembly. They used cabbage as a pH indicator to test the acidity of different solutions.

We have also been researching Marie Curie this afternoon in preparation for writing a biography tomorrow.

Year 4

Today Year 4 have been learning about thrust. We investigated this by seeing how we could move a straw from one side of the room to the other using a string and a balloon without touching it. Not all groups were successful though because sometime some of the balloons thrust was directed in the wrong direction. This caused the balloons to: pop, spiral out of control, bounce, go up, go down and sometimes fall off. Year 4 have learnt that thrust can be a useful force, but hard to generate and control. Year 4 completed this challenge by persevering and using teamwork to share and test ideas.

We also spent the afternoon learning about Rosalind Franklin who further developed the worlds understanding of DNA!
