Debating Skills

What  could the counter argument be?

Today, we looked at defining what a ‘debate’ is (‘a formal argument to discuss an issue or topic’), and when we might use debating in life. We then went onto create some rules for debating in order to keep it formal. These included:

  • Taking turns to speak
  • Putting hands up if we wanted to add a point
  • Speaking in a calm and slow voice
  • Not criticising the opposition

We also looked at how we could use counter arguments as a method to take opposing views and turn them to support our own side of the argument. We then put all of these skills to the test to debate a range of topics, including whether ‘Dogs are better than cats’!
