Shake, Wattle and Daub

Proof that mud pits are as much fun for Y6 as they are for Reception!

Last Winter, in Year 5, the children constructed willow hurdles as they explored Jewish shepherds, nomads and settlement. This year they built on those experiences, adding their own daub to a wattle frame, a technique used by Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.

Mud, water, sand, clay, straw (but not manure...) There's even a connection there with Pharaoh using the Hebrews as slave labour in his brickyards.

The results were mixed. Some of the labourers needed a bit more forward thinking about transporting heavy things over long distances... but both efforts (added to by teams later in the week) have stood firm for two weeks.

That combination of mud and clay does seem to make for some "accidentally" camouflaged cheeks.
